The Mascherari, are known as the mask makers dating back to the 11th century Venetian carnivals. The Mascherari were officially recognized as their own guild in 1436. The practice of wearing masks for a disguise peaked in the 18th century, when venetians of different social classes used the carnival as an excuse to mingle without fear of recognition or retribution.Close
